So earlier this month we decided to return to our caveman roots and start climbing trees again. Tired of seeing the world from down low, we now wanted to see the view from up high!
As a possible new activity for our students we had Mr. Su, the pioneer of tree climbing in Taiwan, come up to YangMing mountain to teach us some new skills. He talked about the origins of tree climbing, the importance there of, etc etc (all in Chinese/Taiwanese, so i couldnt understand a word he said).
He then showed us some different techniques for scaling the rope. You could do it with a strap foot loop, by bouncing and hoisting yourself or by looping the bottom part of the rope around your shoe and stepping up. All of these techniques were very tiring and a cold day up in the mountain turned into a hot and sweaty affair.
By the end of the morning everyone had the tree climbing mastered and we all compared our sore muscles and aches. The overall opinion was that it might be a good activity for our ‘Select Student Program’ or even serve as an optional class activity on overnights.
Climbing trees like this is not just important to learn new techniques. One of the main reasons for doing this is so that researchers can get close to treetops to learn more about the ‘life’ up there; birds, insects, bugs, etc. It’s a safe way to do it, for you and the environment.
